Well I think its easy to manage the comments section using Disqus Comment, its more reliable than other comment plugin. Thanks

Disqus is the top commenting platform in my opinion. Not only is Facebook Connect integration nice but allowing users to also use their Twitter accounts to leave comments is awesome.

It is really good things about DISQUS is the ability to log-in using a Facebook this means visitors can leave comments quickly and painlessly without having to create another account...

yeah, that's the link I used before. i got all of the config files modified, i thought, and added the sql commands to the wp tables and etc. still borked it. You're welcome to try. email roblef@gmail.com and I'll set you up an ftp account and get you db privs.

You don't have to modify the database directly, just some of the Vanilla configuration, to use the WordPress user table instead of its' own.

Yeah, I installed Vanilla on Brandon's suggestion (I think it was Brandon) and that's at http://akwpug.org/vanilla - I've used BBPress and liked the integration, but it was also hacked, so...dunno. You all are admin if you want to be, so feel free to poke around, post, add plugins and the like. As we build this thing up, we can try different themes and then even try our hand at multi-user stuff like wordpress mu (which I'm REALLY liking on my agency site). So, onward?

I'm fine with Disqus for commenting, but it's not a forum. For forum software, there are tons of choices. I kind of like the http://bbpress.org/ system. It's simple and clean. It can be semi-integrated with WordPress, depending upon how you're hosting WP.

Other systems seem like overkill to me. Or you could go wiki. Kinda depends upon what you want the site/group to do, of course.

I agree, connecting with people locally would be of much more benefit to me. The official WordPress support forums are decent, but certainly not great. And if nothing else, it would just be fun to get together with some like-minded people and see what they're building with WordPress.

For me, the value is having local folks in the trenches who can get together
and talk about the stuff that's on other sites and forums. I don't find the
other sites and forums to meet all my needs, and a local group usually is
more fun. For me, that is. :)

I guess the only value I see is a way for us to connect locally, rather than
nationally. So, basically, the same value a local user group provides,
spread to the online world.

I will agree that Disqus handles commenting very well, although it doesn't allow the type of open conversation that a forum does, so either way is going to be a trade off.

As I mentioned in a comment on the last post, the big question to answer before starting up a forum is to ask what value is it adding to the site? Are we going to be solely discussing topics specific to AKWUG, or are we essentially just going to be duplicating more general WordPress content that can be found on other sites & forums?

I've also used Vanilla, which can be integrated with WordPress fairly easily.

I guess the big question as far as needing/wanting a Forum as part of the site, is what value will it provide over what's already present on other sites?

Yeah, that sounds like it might work. I'm wondering about forums, though. Any suggestions on easily managed, not easily hacked ones? I've used bbpress, smf, and phpbb. all have positives and negatives.

Thoughts?
